I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. (Eph.1:19-20 NLT)
It is so easy—and typical—to think of the “greats” of the Christian faith in ways that suggest that they had something you and I do not have. For example, we look at people like John Wesley, or Smith Wigglesworth, or Mother Teresa, and believe that they had a “special connection to the Lord” that is rare and unusual. We look at Paul and Peter and John and imagine that their being Apostles allowed them to do things you and I could never do.
By placing the “great’s” of the faith on pedestals, we allow ourselves to not be quite as high as they were. By assuming that they had a purity of walk we do not have, we further assume that they had the kind of walk we CANNOT have…
The Scripture above—bursting with Resurrection Truth—reminds us that as Christians, we ALL have the very same power that raised Jesus from the dead working in us. We ALL have the very same power that allowed Paul and Peter to raise the dead working in us. We ALL have the very same power that allowed Smith Wigglesworth to pray for and see countless miracles at work in us… We ALL have the very same power that warmed Wesley’s heart and reformed an entire nation (and helped birth this one!) at work in us. We ALL have the same power that allowed Mother Teresa to embrace the lowest outcast at work in us…!
Yes, not all of us are called to preach or teach or lead revival movements—but ALL of us have the very same power that raised Jesus from the dead at work in us! Yes, Scripture reminds us to imitate those who follow the Lord well, but nowhere is it suggested that one part of the Body is more important than another (quite the opposite is clearly stated), or that most of us live with an inferior level of the Spirit of God and a lower degree of tomb-bursting power…!
YOU and I have been filled with power—wonder working power—beyond our wildest imagination! Perhaps it is time to quit building pedestals for others and start unleashing the power already at work in us!
I am not talking about puffing up our fallen egos or reading a book on healthy self-image—one thing we can ALL learn well from the examples mentioned is that they ALL walked in true humility. No, what I am talking about isn’t about elevating ourselves; rather it is about realizing that Jesus has elevated us—seating us next to Himself in the Spiritual realm (Eph. 2:6), in order to continue His ministry on earth through us! Now that is breathtaking!
If you believe in the Resurrection of Christ Jesus—and I know you do—than you must also believe that the Spirit is pouring Living water IN you in order for that power to flow THROUGH you! Church, we have been given a great task and even greater power and we cannot delegate it to some “superstar” pastor or intercessor or worship leader. YOU are seated in Power; rise up where you work and where you live and where you play and let it flow through you…! YOU may well be the closet thing to an EMPTY TOMB many people in your sphere of influence will ever see or feel or know…!
